TSB 05-62-18R: Surface Rust Accumulation in Front Strut Mounts (SOLUTION: New Dust Seals)

TSB 05-62-18R: Surface Rust Accumulation in Front Strut Mounts

This bulletin provides a procedure to address customer concerns of surface rust accumulating in the top center retaining nut area of the front strut mounts. The strut mount cap / seal shape has been changed (outside diameter increased by 30mm) and reinforced to provide improved sealing against water intrusion.

NOTE: Any rust accumulation as described here is cosmetic and will not impair functionality of the strut top.

The remedy is to install an updated dust seal.

There is a NEW, updated Dust Seal PN 20326FL002.

This repair involves thoroughly cleaning then application of rust-preventative finish to the top steel portion of the strut mount(s).

To clean the rust, use:

  • Stainless Steel Wire brush
  • Green Scotch-Brite pads

Two recommended products for this repair are:

  • Rust-Oleum “Stops Rust” spray enamel, p.n. 7779830 or
  • Krylon “Tough Rust” spray enamel, p.n. K09202007

I have ordered the Krylon https://www.amazon.com/Krylon-K09202007-Tough-Preventive-Enamel/dp/B0009XB412

The TSB is here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2023/MC-10237291-0001.pdf

I have just checked mine and this is what a 2021 with 8k miles looks like.
