I have a 2005 Subaru Outback AWD 4 cylinder 6 2.5L FI SOHC 150 CID. Last night my daughter pulled over to wait for an accident to clear. When she tried to start, there was a screeching noise when the car moved forward. It looked normal in contrast. She called me and I suggested she tow it home so I could look at it. The screeching noise seems intermittent when moving the car forward and when leaning into reverse. If it stalls and I cycle from park to neutral to drive it will make a screeching, “not good” noise. Additionally, when in park, it will roll if the emergency brake is not firmly applied.
Here’s my theory, the emergency brake is loose, so I think a lot of pressure is put on the tranny when the car is in park. I think the pressure on the tranny was too much and broke a gear in the tranny. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth repairing.
Thank you in advance.
Steve.
