These are great, can afford them LOT weight, but they are very accurate.
Then, I just built a frame for it out of simple 4x4s so I could use it to measure the weight of the tongue.
Here you can see it in use. Tongue weight is 783 lbs. which was great for my ram truck.
This was just the first prototype. It ended up being much simpler than this because I found it much easier to use the trailer safety chains to connect directly to the scale. This eliminated the horizontal board, the need for it to slide up and down, and the extra chain. So all that was left was the simple 4×4 frame.
Also, for most people, it doesn’t need to be anywhere near that big. My driveway is on a grade so the trailer tongue has to be raised very high for the trailer to be level. If your driveway is level or close to level, the 4×4 frame can be significantly smaller.
This worked brilliantly. The scale ended up being extremely accurate. He agreed with a CAT scale measurement within just a few pounds. I used it extensively to properly balance the load of my travel trailer to achieve optimal tongue weight, something otherwise very difficult to do in the comfort of your driveway. I don’t know why everyone doesn’t use something like this. Simple, but effective.
