HOW TO: Move the backup camera

I have successfully migrated my backup camera. Ultimately I wanted my camera to be up high, so I would have better visibility on both sides of the vehicle (mainly for cars coming perpendicular to me in a parking lot, etc).

HOW TO: Move the backup camera
This is the back of my Ascension, for context:

I bought a second OEM cam so I could leave the original in the stock position (in case I ever want to go back quickly).

I disconnected the OEM cam after removing the tailgate panels:

Then me very much carefully open the harness, isolating the camera cable:

I cut back where the harness joins a larger cable bundle and was able to insulate the camera cable so it could run the length to the inside of the higher rear panel.
(The cable would follow the red path inside the panel):

I wrapped the harnesses and camera cable to make it neat and secure:

And then enter inside the panel:

It slots in between the panel and the window, held in place with some trusty 3M VHB. I’ll go back and fill it with Sugru, or some other cast silicone to clean it up:

But overall I’m very happy! I just did a 7 day camping trip and it worked fine, even with that spare + a bike on the back.
