Gen 5 – 2014 Outback – will Costco install a Group 34?

Bought the suggested battery and not the 34. They were out of the 34 anyway. Simple swap out. Fixed the window, idle, XM and radio presets.

Hopefully no more issues

Thanks.

Andrew

You have probably installed a new battery by now. Which one did you choose, the group 24 or 34. I am tempted to try the 34. The insulation blanket won’t fit because the 34 is an inch longer, but I could get some similar material at my local HD and make a new one.

The 34 appears to be 1” lower. I think that the cables will fit, even though they are about 1” further apart than the group 24 terminals. But I think that I will have to make a couple of spacers 3/4 or 1” long to push the hold down bracket down a little lower. The hold down screws appear to be close to 1/4” dia. even though the are probably metric. I could probably stack 3 or 4 5/16 or 3/8 nuts over the hold down screws, or make a couple of spacers from a small piece of 1/4” pipe.
I have a 3.6H in a 2019 outback and one year ago I killed the battery by having the rear gate open while I loaded and unloaded the car. I did a battery drain test and measured 6 Amps continuously with the rear gate open.
A few weeks ago, I must have bumped the rear storage area roof light switch. I didn’t use the car for 2 days. Completely dead. I couldn’t get one electron out of it.

The original Group 25 battery is puny at 490 CCA. I have been putting new batteries in my cars for about 50 years and I always measured the battery box and installed the highest capacity battery that woukd fit. They got me through New England Winters and gave me good life.

So who has installed the 34 or the 24? Did you have to make two spacer bushings because of the lower height with the 34?
