Gen 4 – Temperature light flashes, then steady, then flickers…

My Outback is a 2011 with only 260k miles on it. Last night on my way home (50 miles one way), I noticed the AC was not blowing cold air. I didn’t think much of it – I haven’t had any problems with the AC until now. I thought maybe it finally needed a cooler. The OPINION that i saw a temp light flashing red but nothing else the rest of the car.

After I hit the highway this morning the temperature light started flashing and I noticed the AC was not cold. Hmm. I’m back. The temperature light turned solid red. Then check engine, traction control light and brake light started flashing – woohoo Christmas in July lights! I was almost home at this point. As I slowed down, I felt a vibration from the engine. Bullshit. I did it at home.

Before turning off the engine, I opened the hood to see coolant pouring around the engine compartment. The coolant level is slightly above the low line. Both fans were spinning. I connected my ODB reader. It showed a P0117 error. “Engine Coolant Circuit Low Temperature”.

Is this most likely just a problem with the radiator? What are some other things it could be? My brother suggested it could be a failed head gasket. I’ve been looking at new cars for the past year, knowing that 250k+ miles have been a great run. If this is a potentially painful/costly fix, it may be time to move on.
