Gen 3 – Ats Wits end.

Hello, I have an Outback 2.5 2008. We’ve been hearing some, sounds like bearing noise, so I pulled the front hub bearings, and front axles last week. I replaced the front left axle, which I think was going bad, and the front right hub bearing, little noisy when I probed it with the stefascop and it was under warranty so I figured what the the hay.

Now I hear different noise that my wife said it has been making for quite some time.

I jacked the left rear wheel off the ground and I can turn that wheel and drive shaft freely all the way to the transmission. Car is in park and emergency brake released. Is this normal for an all wheel drive?
I’m at my wits end with this car. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

In the rear, yes. This is normal. Parking pawl in the transmission is on the front wheels.

Thank you. I’m pulling the drive shaft to check the U joints and carrier bearing. Makes me motion sick to lay under a vehicle. Don’t know why.

Are you doing this in the drive way? Do you wear glasses?

Yep. What I wouldn’t give for a lift.

Ok I’ve got the drive shaft pulled. Both front and back U joints have a sticking spot at dead center when straight. About like it snaps in a groove when straightened. The center carrier bearing feels ok? Turns easy, but when spun by hand I can hear the bearings.

This can has 140,000 miles on it, just to mention that. I’m guessing U joints can’t be replaced? Maybe new drive shaft? Uh this car has been eating me up with repairs.

You are starting to get the early signs of night blindness which is acerbated by your astigmatism. I had the same problem. I’d get down on my hands and knees to set a lift in the garage. Being in the light on one side of the car, and looking underneath (where it was dark) and trying to focus without light wash from the seeing the shop wall from the other side of the car, bugged my eyes out. By the end of the day, I wanted to barf.

If you have the shaft disconnected, try to turn the u-joints on their x and y axis. They should turn/flop smoothly. If you feel any binding, sticky spots, or a ratcheting feel, the joint is shot.

If you can, get the rear higher than the front, this will keep the fluid in the tranny from leaking out the output shaft hole. Pull the entire shaft. Inspect each joint individually. The carrier bearing can be a little misleading. It will have a bit of a growl to it as it is a ball bearing. It will have a bit of a wobble to it as it is suspended in rubber. Generally the carrier is either good, or quite obviously bad. Penetration lube the carrier bearing bolts. The capture nuts like to freeze. You will have a bad weekend if you break one of those.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no replacement joints available. It would be an entire drive shaft replacement. If you live in an industrial area, there are shops that just repair drive shafts. They have access to u-joints sold by dimension rather than part numbers. They can make something work.
