I’m curious – why do you prefer not to lay the seat backs down? Doing so gives a lot more room for pups to breathe and stretch out, and the seat stays clean.
An inexpensive and replaceable 72 by 80 inch mover’s blanket covers the whole back area, hangs over the front, even goes up the sides, and after eleven years the seats, seat backs and cargo area still look pretty much like new.
I ordered my car in 2012 with the Subaru rubber protectors that fasten to the backs of the seat backs. They are still like new thanks to the blanket.
I always have two dogs with me.
The blankets are usually about $15.00 each. The last ones I bought were two for $24.00.
The back bumper is scratch-free thanks to that $7.00 area rug from Walmart.
