Its formulation releases cleanly even on textured surfaces and is quite heat resistant.
That said, suspending an anti-gravity item (even as light as most radar detectors) – especially with some cord tension in play – has been my experience (with mounting similar items, such as the GReddy Turbo Timer) that the replacement Routine taping will be necessary, especially if the vehicle is not garaged, in more extreme climates.
The good thing is that the phone jack cord serves well as a safety connector if the glue suddenly fails.
A more definitive fit can be obtained with any of the 3M VHB adhesive products, including the Dual-Lock “velcro-type” resealing system –
– which is conveniently available in either black or clear (which will unfortunately yellow over time, but routine replacement takes care of that concern). VHB means it will be a little extra work to release it for removal, but in my experience, it will also release cleanly.
From Escort, Bel, Uniden and Valentine, I’ve honestly had it the best good luck with the V1’s factory suction cup mount. As with @Steve70, I never had the V1 mounting cups both release, and single-cup releases occur much less frequently than with other brands’ offerings. I haven’t tried to upgrade to the Gen2 yet, so I can’t comment on its fitment, but assuming they still get the suction cups from the same vendor, I’d be fine with that too.
With more difficult windshield mounts, I’ve found that putting a very, very thin bead of high-grade vacuum grease around the circumference of the cup can drastically increase its staying power in all conditions . The downside of this is of course the slight mess it makes if you remove the mount, but when applied so sparingly, it’s nothing even a single Kleenex can’t easily handle.
