Thank you very much. The downside to the Yakima is that it also requires clamps and an adapter and has a limited size range. Prinsu is a much bigger platform. Some of the items I want to carry are more a matter of size that weighs, but still. If I could have everything on the rig, it would be: Heretic 40″ light bar, 2 pairs of MaxTrax and Prinsu mounts, or Yakima RoadShower (7 gal) or 3.8 gal PowerTank (with mounts), RotopaX 2 gal H2O, FuelpaX 3.5 girl, some lids and a shovel. Only RoadShower or PowerTank and FuelPax would have fluids. I know I’m already overweight with those
Thank you. The Prinsu rack, plus my full load of goodies I’d like to have on it, comes in at about 162 lbs (and that’s with the heavier WaterPort tank of the day rather than the Yakima RoadShower). The equivalent Yakima comes in at 183 lbs. The Prinsu is lighter and that’s not even counting the extra cargo I gain by not having the Subaru roof rails. Prince wins, as long as the man doesn’t mind the challenge of installing it.
3.8 gals of water add 31.5 lbs and 3.5 gals of gas add 21.7 lbs. If I only give myself an extra 18 lbs for the lack of Subie rails (hardware 16lbs + 2lbs), the capacity is 194 lbs. So I’m 162 lbs + 31.5 + 21.7 = 215.2 lbs (21.2 lbs overweight). I can always remove the side shower stall and put it inside the car until we park. That shaves off 15 pounds. So I’m close. However, we probably won’t drive through everything at once and have no stored water. We will try to fill water as close to the off road location as possible. Then we’ll be riding slow park access roads, so the dynamic forces should be quite low, even though they’re rougher. We are not rock climbing so center of gravity issues are not my fear. Plus, my automotive background tells me there’s still a good margin of safety in roof loading.
Also, the tallest item on the shelf is 11″ tall. Everything else is only 4.5″ tall or less. I’m also trying to keep the drag as low as possible.
