I made custom emblem covers!!

We’ve had a Steal Your Face on every vehicle since the 80s. We have other sticker-covered (and chalkboard paint) vehicles, but Stealies on the daily driver were always more elegantly placed. This was a challenge with the Ascent.

Further, we have custom plates that refer to the String Cheese Incident, a well-known but otherwise obscure jamband. The plates are also a little vague such that they could refer to strange chess, string cheese in general, or whatever. Paired with a Stealy, it’s clear to anyone in the community what they mean.

We searched and searched for something, but none really worked with Alice’s (our Ascent’s name, from an SCI song) lines and overall aesthetic. Some were close, but just not right for us. So I eventually got it in my head to 3D print something.

After a lot of thinking, planning, learning and lots of prototyping, I got the fit just right. Then after another week+ of priming, masking, epoxying and clear-coating, we put them on — the fit was perfect and the look was exactly what we were hoping for!

They’re printed in ABS for durability and held on with 3M Molding Tape so they can be redone if something happens to them on the road.

If I ever do redo them, I’m going to send the CAD files out to get metal faces cut and then splurge for Subaru touch-up paints to really match the finish.

If anyone’s interested, I’m going to upload the files to our Thingaverse account or I can send them to you.

Now to go out driving until someone honks at us in recognition!

(Not sure how to rearrange the gallery, but the final images are at the end)
