Gen 4 – 2011 Legacy EJ253 ( 215K Km’s ) – Headgasket leaking.

How many kilometres has the vehicle travelled and why are you getting the head gaskets replaced (what does “blown” mean and what are the symptoms)?

The 2011 models have MLS (Multi Layer Steel) head gaskets fitted at the factory and are not known for head gasket failures like the 2000 to 2009 models with single layer head gaskets.

If going ahead with the work you should get the heads resurfaced as this will help to minimise the chance of the head gaskets failing again.

Make sure that MLS head gaskets are used when the work is done.

The timing belt kit should have Japanese pulleys/bearings and a Japanese tensioner. Chinese pulleys/bearings and tensioners can fail prematurely (before 125,000Km’s which is the scheduled replacement time for a 2011 Australian/NZ/JDM vehicle)

Make sure you use a Japanese water pump or a GMB water pump. If you choose to use a Subaru water pump (costs about $20 to $30 more) it will last for at least 200,000Km’s if you keep the cooling system maintained).
