Car locked, car on, key out won’t unlock

I just test drove my car. With the engine running, the transmission in park, but the parking brake not engaged, if I get out of the car, the car beeps to let me know the fob is not in the car and won’t let me lock the door by touching the handle or pressing the buttons phobit.

I also tested leaving a fob in the car, under the same conditions, and while the car won’t beep, it still won’t let me lock the door by touching the handle or using the fob outside the car.

It seems pretty clear that the system is ignoring the handle and fob lock if the engine is running, in my car, regardless of whether there is a fob in the car or not.

The mystery is how/why the car allowed itself to shut down with the engine running.
