Generation 5 – 2014 External overheating problem on long drives

First of all, this problem does not appear in daily driving. Most of our driving is on trips of 250 miles or less, with the vast majority being 60 or less.

However, on the last two occasions I’ve driven to take my son to college, the car has overheated. The first day of approximately 775 miles goes smoothly without any problems. However, during the return trip it overheats. It’s hard to tell exactly when the problem occurs because it seems to be air cooled enough on the interstate, but if I pull over for gas or food it makes itself known.

The first time it happened the mechanic said the radiator was faulty and replaced it. Now it just happened again with the new radiator (and the head gaskets were replaced about 30k miles ago).

Again, I’ve done multiple 250-400 mile trips with no problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you very much!
