2023 External Battery Problems—Questions | Subaru Outback Forums

We do not have enough data to answer this definitively, and there have been no documented changes to the charging algorithm.

Having said that, most people don’t have problems with the charging system – some have had damaged batteries, some have had parasitic discharge like the Starlink not turning off (but the 2023 has a new module) and if you drive infrequently, or do very long trips In short, the charging algorithm may not fully recharge the battery enough to last 2 weeks at the airport. There are solutions, but the charging algorithm is designed to be “smart” to reduce fuel consumption.

If you want to investigate this, on the 2020-2022 exterior you can put the car in factory mode or dealer mode and while sitting at idle, check the system voltage. If it is below 13 volts, then it is not charging. If it is below 12.5 volts, it discharges. If you turn on the turn signal, parking lights, headlights, or take off (among several other conditions) it will immediately rise to 14+ volts and recharge the battery. I don’t recall any 2023 owners testing this specifically.

A common cause of battery drain is when the load light is inadvertently set to the “on” position and it stays on all night and drains the battery.
