Saw a video where said person used the recovery hook to help secure equipment stored on the roof. I was setting up my kayak this past weekend and tried this just to see. I have a 23 Wilderness Outback so my reinforced roof rack already comes with heavy duty metal ring attachments to secure the roof hardware so I used those instead of this pictured setup. My straps extended from the kayak handles back to the rack at both ends. A little safer this way in my opinion. Anyway, the thought of sharing this other attachment option for people who can run a cable or straps to the bottom of the front or rear bumpers should save you from scratching them with that setup.
