Sunglass holder insulation? | Subaru Outback Forums

I didn’t get any advice, at least nothing that I would recommend someone try. But I have complaints much like yours. The compartment is too small for today’s modern glasses and yes, the smoke that comes out of the compartment when I open it to get the glasses is ridiculous.

I thought about removing the entire panel to see what could be done, but in such a small space I can’t see much improvement being made. A layer of Thinsulate material might help, but not much. I have considered spray foam behind the panel and then put the panel back in place and let the foam harden. But then the panel will be difficult to remove and the foam can seep into the glasses area, which would be a pain to clean.
If someone could find a good sized asbestos sheet to install behind the panel that would be perfect. One can hold things in one’s hand and place a torch on the opposite side and feel no heat. But good luck finding it today.
Foil won’t help, as it conducts heat like nothing else.
The compartment should be much deeper, one, for a good layer of insulation and two, to make room for modern sunglasses. Aviators are just not my thing.
And yes, “smoke” was an exaggeration, but you get my point.
Airgel is a killer insulator, I’ll see how available it is and how expensive it is.
