Some Thoughts on the IIHS’s Updated Moderate Overlap Frontal Crash Test

I’ve always chosen Subaru for its excellent safety ratings and excellent handling.

I recently noticed that the IIHS started the updated moderate overlap frontal crash test, the updated test primarily for rear passengers. I believe all Ascent owners care about it.

Reading the insuctions from the IIHS, the key to influencing the updated test rating is the second row seat belt, regardless of whether it has pretensioners and load/force limiters. Some low-end cars without these features received very poor ratings (such as the Subaru Impreza).

For the Ascent, the new rating only applies to the 2022 and 2023 model years. Which makes me wonder if the 2019-2021 Ascent doesn’t have these two second-row seat belt features. However, the updated side crash test applies to all model years.

I could not find this information from the subaru website or anywhere else, not even the owner’s manual. Does anyone have any ideas on this? I own an Ascension 2019. Thank you.
