I bought a 2014 OB manual transmission back in October at just 63,000 miles, clean title, service history done with Subaru, bought from a Subaru dealership. Months go by without any issues, except for the ever-so-often low oil light showing up in the display. I kept topping it off, until I decided contacting Subaru of America for advice. They recommended I do an oil consumption test, which I did, and the car failed the test. It is consuming about 1.5x the maximum amount recommended by Subaru as “normal” (consumed 18oz. over 1200 miles, instead of 12oz). Thus, it needs a new short block assembly. The extended warranty for this issue expired in February 2022. Subaru offered to cover the cost of parts (~$3400) if I pay for the labor (~$4350). From the limited research I did on the topic, I feel like I’m getting special treatment from Subaru, but still find it hard to justify the costly labor for the repair.
So my question for the community is – do you think this is a worthwhile investment?
