First a background…
I changed the oil at 500 miles. This was a challenge because the drain bolt was extremely tight and/or painted and I had to use an impact gun which made a mess. I changed the thrust washer and torqued the bolt to 31 foot pounds.
I changed the oil at 1500 miles and at 3000 miles. There is no problem with removing the bolt. Every time I changed the washer and bolt. Twisted to 31 foot pounds.
Since it was included in the purchase, I had the dealer perform the 6 month/6,000 mile service 3 months ago which included an oil change.
Turn the clock forward for today. I take everything out, slide under the car and go to put the 14mm plug in the drain bolt. What do I see? Two of the faces (not the correct term?) of the bolt are rounded. I think this will not be good, and it was not. Slide the 14mm plug into the bolt, make sure it is fully engaged. Not only did it have rounded edges on the bolt, but it was extremely tight, just as tight as the first time.
I have tried several methods to remove this bolt. A crescent grief on the remaining faces that were not rounded, is captured. Nothing worked. I will still be able to change the oil with my fluid evacuator.
Do you have any suggestions for other methods to remove this bolt?
I know there are many different types of bolt extractors. Is one better than the other?
Type 1
Type 2
Type 3
SP
My 12 month/12,000 mile service is due in May, and I will let the dealer know about this, as well as tell them to remove the bolt, if all else fails.
