Replacing front struts and other stuff

I very often check this forum for information but have never posted. I want to pass along what I have learned about the Subaru front suspension. My wife’s 2019 Ascent developed a significant banging noise when driving over slight dips in the road at any speed. My first thought was the struts are bad. But at 74K should the struts be gone already?
Going underneath, it seemed that the sway-bar end links were needing replacing. I replaced them with a new pair of links with a grease fitting. It helped but didn’t fix. I decided to check the sway bar bushings. For 20 bucks I decided to replace them as the original ones had developed an oval inside so they were shot. Still didn’t fix my problem. I decided that “in for a dime, in for a dollar” so I ordered new ball joints. They were a little tough to get out. I spread the pinch bolt area as best I could and then torched the crap out of it. Eventually I had to use an air hammer to drive them out but, ok. After removal, I don’t think they were bad but it got new ones, anyway. Again it didn’t fix the banging.

While researching this issue, I found a bulletin that said the front springs were not strong enough. Ascents after vin #L3406693 have new stronger springs. Mine was in the soft group so I ordered new springs. They arrived and I figured my problems were soon to be over. I should know better than to figure.

Pull the strut out and get it on the bench for spring removal. Spring is off and, again, I figured I was rounding third and heading for home. Since I figured, you know what is coming. Spring is off and I can push the strut plunger in with one hand. Unbelievable. I called the local Subaru parts department to see if they had any is stock, seeing as my wife’s vehicle is now on safety stands and I better do something. Parts guy says “none in stock but I may be able to get you one by the end of next week.” (one?) I asked how the struts could go with less than 75K on them. He said “that’s about right.” I told him that might be about right but it’s not right.

New struts are on order from Subaru (I question the wisdom of ordering Subaru parts) and I will install them when they get here. If this doesn’t work, the Ascent may go.

FYI, I am not a mechanic. I have been working on my own cars since I was 19 because I had no money and couldn’t afford to pay to get things fixed. I do have all the tools necessary to work on vehicles and am not afraid to try anything. I suspect that most readers of this forum could do what I did with enough time and effort.

That’s my story, it’s sad but true.
