Miles remaining vs fuel gauge vs. low fuel light

today, i filled my 3rd tank of gas (computer is reasonably consistent on last two tanks vs hand calc) at 1/4 tank, and filled up 12.5 gallons. the dash computer showed 100 miles remaining on a tank that was averaging 26.0 MPG. while the gauge made sense to me relative to my ’12 Impreza where “E” and the fuel light would come on with nearly 2gallons remaining, i was surprised at the miles remaining estimate. on my Impreza, that estimate was pretty spot on. i never hit zero (got down to 30 miles once) and it seemed to reflect the real amount of fuel left in the tank.

it seems that if i were to hit 0 miles remaining on the Outback, i would likely have 1.5-2 gallons to go. is that correct based on people’s experiences?

while i don’t have any intention of cutting it close, i’m trying to get a feel for the different metrics my car is using to tell me the amount of fuel remaining.
