I have a 2006 OBW 2.5i 5spd manual and will be changing the transmission oil soon. I’m aware that Subaru recommends 75w-90 gear oil, but I’ve heard that we should stay away from certain brands.
To summarize, I have read to stay away from Mobile 1 gear oil. Also synchromesh brand gear oils.
I read that the OEM Subaru Extra-S was the option for the best feel and performance; but, it has since been discontinued and replaced with Subaru “high performance gear oil”.
I have read mixed reviews about Redline 75w-90 gear oil. Some love it, some have said it can be dangerous. I have also read mixed reviews about Amsoil gear oil, some say it makes shifting worse when cold..
At the moment, my hubcap drives pretty well and sounds smooth (ie the mainshaft bearings must be intact) while driving. I’m hoping that whatever I fill it with will at least maintain the relatively good shift quality I have now, or ideally, improve it.
I’m leaning towards getting the 4 bottles of OEM Subaru high performance gear oil because it seems the safest. But if there’s something better, I’m all for it!
What do you guys think?
