manual trans is going, thoughts on how to prolong

So, I started chasing down a leak on my shift shaft seal after we noticed it jumping out of 4th gear for no reason. Also discovered low gear oil and have been topping off.
Now when I check the trans fluid, it’s not going down, but the stick does seem to have some silver on it… ie, mechanics would tell me to replace the transmission.

I don’t think it makes sense for me to sink the $3000ish ( here in the CA Bay Area: $1000 used trans, $1000 for new clutch, $1000 labor etc) into this old car. (it looks like ****, burns oil, and probably has some other issues)

But I like her, and it still gets around. I think I’m going to keep on driving her until it won’t go any more. Might get quite a ways.

I’d love to get any advice from experts on what small things I might do to prolong this transmission. Really flush the fluid? would getting the silver fluid out actually do that much? if so, I’d love to hear how to do it thoroughly.

would replacing the linkage thing between the stick and shaft actually help at all?

What else?
