How far should the tilting moon roof be opened?

A few months ago I foolishly left the moonroof on my 2011 Outback Limited 3.6R open overnight, and sure enough it rained. I was able to dry it out pretty well by leaving everything open in hot, dry weather during the day for a few days, and nothing seemed to be the worse for it… except that now the moonroof would only open about half an inch. I was told that the entire assembly would have to be replaced, to the tune of about $2400, so I decided to just live with it. I kept using the tilt function until one day it stopped working completely with the tilt in the open position.
So I decided to go for the replacement, except now it still only opens about half an inch like it did before it stopped working.
Of course I will insist that it be adjusted properly, but I wonder: how much should it open in the tilt position? I could swear it was opening further than this originally, but I wanted to see if anyone knew the answer to this question.
