Generation 4 – Check engine light, brake light flashing, cruise control light flashing

Yesterday, while driving my ’13 Outback 2.5, moments after setting my cruise control, the cc suddenly disconnected and my IP flashed. The check engine light came on steady, the brake light started flashing, and the cruise control light started flashing. I pulled off the road, turned the ignition off briefly and restarted the car. The same lights came on again. The car still ran normally, so I went home. On the way, I tried to engage the cruise control, but it wouldn’t engage.

When I got home I ran diagnostics on it and got a plethora of error codes. There were so many I didn’t record them, but some were from the ECM, there were brake system errors, transmission errors, and a steering angle sensor error. Since the codes were all over the place, and I didn’t know if they were all new and related to this incident, if any were old, I decided to clear all the codes, drive the car some more, and see which, if any errors would return. Clearing the codes also cleared the IP trouble lights and allowed cc to work again. All back to normal.

I drove the car this morning, repeatedly engaging the cc, raising and lowering the set point, and disengaging and re-engaging the c/c. I got home and did another diagnosis. There are no codes. No hazard lights.

My plan is to continue driving it as normal, and run diagnostics on it often to see if any codes come back. But I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced the same condition. If so, what was your experience? Codes returned? Did you have to repair anything? Or is it just a freak occurrence that will never happen again?

This is really weird for my car. With 155k miles on the odometer, it has been rock solid. The only repair I’ve had to do is replace burned out pond lights. So I don’t know what to do about it.
