Gen 7 – Where to mount the phone without interfering with EyeSight?

The airflow thing is about moving air that carries physical particles that can be blown into the cavity area of the camera lens. If those particles are large enough or allowed to accumulate over time somehow, then it’s plausible that they could obscure EyeSight’s vision so much that it can’t distinguish depth and thus not function properly. The newer EyeSight 4.0 design where the camera hoods are flush with the windshield should alleviate this problem, but for the rest of us we need to be a little more vigilant.

My camera in both our cars is located relatively close to the EyeSight camera. I’m definitely in the gray area, but I also tested the camera position extensively to see if EyeSight changed behavior before committing to that position permanently.

The exterior is mounted directly behind the rearview mirror because I have ADB which uses the EyeSight cameras to spot oncoming vehicles instead of needing a third camera:

The XV is mounted offset to EyeSight because this car has the third camera behind the rearview mirror. This position is not affecting the view in any way:

My recommendation is to get a piece of cardboard, cut it roughly the same size as what your mount would be and glue it to the windshield, then go for a test run on a safe, empty road. See if EyeSight complains and then adjust accordingly. If it generally doesn’t complain about it, then do a test drive by following other cars with adaptive cruise control at a safe distance so you can manually react in time if something goes wrong. If EyeSight is still happy after this, you have your final position.
