Gen 6 – Outback Touring 2020 head to head with 2024

Traded in my 2020 last week and bought a new 2024. Dealer experience wasn’t very good but I posted about that in another thread. I wanted to mention some things I have noticed between the two model years. Most of the differences are minor and ergonomic.
1. First and foremost, the radio head seems to be working much better than my 2020 which had constant problems. The Sirius radio connects very quickly ( and so far) reliably compared to my 2020. Android Auto takes a few seconds to connect but has also been reliable. I did have some initial trouble getting my phone to connect. The BT wouldn’t connect at first. I had to clear my Android Auto storage and cache on my phone. This is actually covered in the manual but initially, I just plugged in the phone and it didn’t work. Seems like the 2020 data in my phone was getting confused with the 2024 BT data. Anyway, all good (for) now. We’ll see if it stays reliable.
2. Rearview mirror: Seems like the 2024 version is mounted a little higher on the windshield than the 2020. The sunglass hatch, if open, will partially block the 2024 mirror where it didn’t in the 2020.
3. Steering wheel buttons: The cruise control buttons on the right side are the same so that’s good. One slight difference is the speed setting logic has changed. On the 2020, a quick click up or down set the speed to the nearest multiple of 5mph. If you wanted to increment by 1 mph you could long-press. In the 2024, they reversed that logic. A 5mph click now takes a long press. I almost always just use the 5mph increment so I would have preferred if they hadn’t changed that.

The buttons on the left side have changed and I don’t think the ergonomics are as good. The 2020 had the phone controls and info button in a separate group below the audio control buttons. On the 2024, all the buttons are in one panel and they put the phone control buttons in between the channel selection which is at the top and the volume + – which is now at the bottom. I use the channel selection and volume a lot as I change XM stations. The right-arrow button is next to the Source button and I seem to miss and hit the source if I don’t look at what I am doing. The left arrow button, they made smaller and triangular so my fingers tend to press the button below as well.

That’s all I have noticed so far.

I had trouble with the OEM battery in my 2020 and it needed to be replaced. Other than tires, that’s all I had done on my 2020 over 55k miles. So we’ll see how the 2024 battery and other systems hold up.
