Gen 6 – Footwell lights wired into the dome light – DIY with OEM LEDs

I thought I’d write up this little project in case it’s of use to someone. I wanted footwell lights, and wanted them to come on with the dome light. I didn’t want the Subaru solution (kit H461SAN000) which is on whenever the side and head lights are on. I did similar a few years ago on my 2017 WRX STI by tapping into the dome light wiring, and I also took inspiration from these threads (good info in there – thanks!)

I collected the parts over the last couple of months. The Subaru kit is £135 but I was only likely to use the LEDs. Past experience of getting piece-parts from the Subaru dealer network led me to just go straight to the internet, and I could only find them available in the US and not cheap, plus postage etc. On a hunch I tried Toyota and Lexus parts and sure enough Toyota 81080-22040 looks identical. I got one from a breakers to verify, then got some new ones. 31 quid all in for 4 from the UAE – only 2 required for the footwell lights, the rest were to replace the umber coloured glovebox lights (on my Outback and STI).

And connectors to fit into the LEDs, Yazaki 7283-5845, £12 delivered for 5 (always worth getting a few extra).

I could only find free wiring diagrams for Gen5, but figured it would be close enough to get started. I did similar for my STI and it seems there’s not much difference in the designs between generations and also LHD and RHD. Instead of faffing under the dash near the fuse box as I did on the STI, I chose to tap into the roof loom which goes up the passenger side of the windscreen. Pulled the cladding off, comes off easy by pulling from the top. First I ran my new cable down into the footwell, there are a few holes in the corner and after a couple of goes it came right out.

For those in North America (and maybe elsewhere), yes I did say passenger side. My steering wheel is on the correct side of the car.

So based on the Gen5 wiring diagrams I was looking for a green (power) and a brown (variable earth courtesy of the body control module, which controls the dimming) wire. The voltmeter indicated the green was correct but the brown wasn’t giving me what I expected. The dome light has pink and green.

Back to the loom connector and there are 3 pinks…. So I buzzed it out and it was this pink and the green (only one).

A bit of soldering

Then wired up the connectors for the LEDs. Wasn’t sure on the polarity, only 2 wires so 50:50 of getting it right. Bit of Tesa loom tape to stop any rattles.

Connected to the panels above the foot space – panels are just held in with the blue clips, just pull down to remove. The LEDs clip into the panels.

Then ran the wire from the drivers side to the passengers, thought this would be a pain but just poked it through and it came out the other side first try.

Bit more soldering, reconnect the battery and… you remember the 50:50 on the connectors…. ok, so I had to swap the pins over and then all good! Not much point showing the pics of the footwell lights in action, difficult for the camera to capture it.

I hope this helps someone. It wasn’t driven by cost saving (although by doing it this way the part cost was much cheaper than the Subaru kit, and I had all the other consumables on hand) but more by wanting it to work the way I wanted it to work. And it works perfect
