My gasket was definitely not good and had a lot of carbon. This would cause the part to detach.
Absolutely not. More likely it’s a bent/stuck valve that didn’t lift, a broken spring retainer or spring, a completely worn cam lobe, things like that.
I was really hesitant to post the following and thought a lot about what to say against:
I mean no offense here and my intention is to save you heartache, trouble and wasted money, because I think that’s where you’re going, but – if you intend to rebuild/repair this engine, I think you’re way out of your league . When one has many years as a licensed mechanic (me) one tends to understand the phrase “I don’t know what I don’t know”. It means someone understands what can go wrong and believe me, that’s a lot. And I’ll be honest here – I have no experience with Subaru, but I think the basics are still up there in my noodle somewhere.
