Gen 4 – 2014 Clock Spring

I’ve had a number of Legacies and Outbacks, from 1991. I have a no horn problem, and it appears it’s the clock spring on our 2014 Outback. I do have a lot of experience making repairs on Subarus, but I’ve never had this problem before. I was able to get an OEM part from Tacoma Subaru for $119, which seemed quite reasonable.

I understand the principle of the clips holding the airbag to the steering wheel. I’ve looked at several different YouTube videos showing how to release the clips. I’ve tried a pick (as in the A1 Auto), a philips screwdriver (per Valley Mobile), slotted screwdrivers. I could see the spring clip on the bottom of the steering wheel, and was able to easily release it.

I’m having trouble releasing the side springs (near paddle shifters). I can’t see into the holes (I’ve tried flashlight through the windshield, mirrors, etc.), so I’m working by feel. The videos all seem to have a “and then magic happens” experience, and the clips release. I can push on what I believe is the spring itself, making the airbag/horn pad move, but I can’t figure out where the clip is.

Can anyone help me with more direction than just keep trying different angles? I’m afraid of breaking something inside or damaging a wire, especially with the air bag in there.

Would it make sense to cut bigger holes to view and work with? Having a horn is more important than the cosmetics, but I’d rather not use a hole saw or other tool if there’s a more elegant way.

Thank you.
