Gen 3 – 2.5l Replace or Rebuild

hello,

2007 Outback with the 2.5 liter engine at 175,000 miles.

This has been a great car for our son and we were hoping to get him up to 250k miles. From what I can see, it’s in really great shape for its age. He lives in Denver and often used it to access the mountains. Everything seems to be working out for him.

Alas, and I’ll spare you the gory details, but someone failed basic maintenance to ensure the oil level was adequate and now we have a knocking noise under acceleration.

Assuming the worst here, I have inquired about repair/replacement and have the following:

  1. Remanufactured motor for $5k-$6k installed.
  2. A used engine with 126000 miles for $2800 + $850 installed. No history on that engine.
  3. Found a shop that seems to have a good reputation and they say a rebuild of this engine for about $4,800

We are leaning towards rebuilding the existing engine and just wanted to get some feedback on whether or not it is a good idea.

I’m a Subaru neophyte so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you very much!
