Gen 2 – Overheating H6

I picked up a 2001 Subaru H6 Outback LL Bean. The previous owner said that the car will over heat after driving for about 10-20 mins but will not over heat sitting at idle with the AC on full blast, I confirmed this. I do not hear any “abnormal” noises coming from under the hood, no coolant and oil mix, do not see water in the oil, no white smoke and no visible leaks. Coolant and oil levels seem to be staying where they need to be. I also did one of those combustion gas testers from O’reily and it didn’t change colors, so I am leaning away from head gaskets but I am not a mechanic just have worked in the industry for long time.

The previous owners took it in to have repaired and cannot remember what all was done (insert eye roll) but were still having overheating issues. Took it to another place and they said that it needs the head gasket replaced but that the shop refused to work on it cause it’s a Subaru. Also claimed that the Subaru dealer had said that they wouldn’t replace the head gaskets either which I found super odd. So low and behold, I bought it for a fancy $500. Even if it needs the head gaskets done, $500 is a steal. He has been deemed to be called “The Bean”

Just curious on thoughts here. I know enough that the H6 head gaskets are rare to go bad.
