Differential and Transmission Fluids for 2020 Outback

For fluids that the manual has an SAE classification, you simply need to fill in that specification (or a specification that is backwards compatible)

For example:

  • SAE 75w-90 differential/gear oil
  • Motor oil SAE 0w-20 (full synthetic SN/SP, GF-5/GF-6)
  • Brake fluid DOT3

Some Subaru fluids do not provide a specification, but instead provide a product

  • Subaru Super Cooler
  • Subaru CVTF (4 different types)

Now there are blue “import” coolants that are said to be fully compatible and are used by forum members, but during warranty I would stick with the Subaru coolant.
For CVTF during warranty you absolutely must use genuine Subaru CVTF as described in the owner’s manual.

After warranty there are some CVT fluids that are specifically designed to fit one and only one of the four Subaru CVT fluids and they MAY work fine, but given the cost of a new transmission is it really worth it? The OEM CVT fluid has lasted up to 300,000 miles for some forum members without ever changing it. It’s not junk juice. Having said that, best practice might be to do a drain and fill (partial change) every 60k miles or so. As mentioned by others, the process is complicated.
