They seize – then the belt sildes over them – overheating and breaking.
So you would need the belt and the bearings/pulleys.
The bearings in the H6 idler pulleys should be replaced every 60,000 miles.
There’s a sticky on this forum regarding:
1. replacing the pulley bearings – they’re $10 each (japanese quality bearings) and takes 5 minutes to replace. hand a mechanic to 6203 bearings (available on amazon) and they can install them in 10 minutes)
2. there’s an interchangeable Dayco pulley available at nearly any autoparts store for $20.
3. dealers are $250 – $300 to replace those items. Namely because they’ll replace the entire tensioner rather than just the pulley on the tensioner.
Or maybe just the belt broke – that would be very odd as Subaru belts are excellent quality and rarely fail outside of old age/high mileage.
