P0340 = broken timing belt

So much intelligence!

All my exhaust valves except 1 cylinder are completely broken, with all my intake valves completely broken as well. My mechanic put a belt on and the engine started right up, but only 2 cylinders fired and the engine sounded TERRIBLE, on the phone. She looked so sick :(; he said he smelled a ton of crude fuel.

He’s going to take the heads off and examine today, but he’s actually optimistic that the bottom is in good shape, so he’s looking at a rebuild eventually.

It was a Gates kit and the strap completely, completely snapped:

Automotive Tire Vehicle Rim Automotive Wheel System Screw
Tires Automotive tires Motor vehicles Wheel tread
Motor vehicles Cars Automobile tires Hood Automobile lighting

I’m 3-4,000 KM within Warranty with Gates… but their process is really weird and they require that the original shop (a Mitsubishi dealer where my dad worked at the time) and the original part dealer (Napa, here in Ontario ), complete the documents and go through the process.

Mitsubishi flat-out refuses to help me at all and no one who worked there at the time still works there, so I can’t ask Napa if they are willing, so I’m stuck (“regardless of any manufacturer’s warranty, if doesn’t match our 1 year/20,000 KM in-house warranty, we won’t honor it. I don’t mean to sound rude, but I don’t want to waste any more of my time or yours).

I’m just waiting for my mechanic to evaluate everything and whether or not there is any damage to the bottom.

He’s pissed because he’s done about 70-80TB in the last two years and ONLY used Gates so he’s worried about someone else failing prematurely now… but that’s his problem lol.

Aisin is the way to go now.
