As with any model designed 7 or so years ago, the shine is fading on the Ascent as younger faces with better tech skills come into their own- sounds like what I face at work as a 65 year-old schoolteacher. This always happens with average-priced cars after a while. However, we see in this ranking sampling that ’24 Ascent (now ranked 26th in mid-size 3-row SUV’s) still has a significantly lower starting price point and (as we all know) has legendary Subaru full time AWD on every model with a still-impressive safety suite. C & D notes the quirky low speed acceleration action as do many of us, but doesn’t seem to have a problem reaching acceptable MPG’s on their test and likes the towing capacity but found single digit MPG while towing large trailer. Subaru will never reach Toyota, Nissan, or even Mazda sales numbers. We are unicorns, but dedicated ones. If Subaru was a “Big 3” automaker back in the 60’s, it wouldn’t be in the “Big 3″, it would probably be AMC/Rambler. But, AMC’s were great cars, too with their own specialties including early laydown seats, climate control, higher mpg, and a ‘just right” sizing that seated as many as competitor’s larger, more extravagant models.
As we ride our quirky Ascent’s into their (relative) model middle age, we can enjoy that Subaru “came to play” in 2018 and we’ve all bought enough of them to keep them around so far.
