2017 Odometer vs ECM Odometer Reading big difference

Recently I purchased and X-tool A30Pro diagnostics tool, because according to the description, the tool had very good coverage, free lifetime software updates, compatible with FD-CAN bus, etc etc etc.

In testing the A30Pro I connected it to my 2017 Outback with 121k miles on the dashboard. In looking at the live data on the tool, I found the odometer reading from the ECM, and to my surprise it read 81k miles and change. I then created a service ticket with X-tool, and after a few days they came back and they said that there was no error in their tool

I then got my Autel Maxicom MK908P, and to my surprise, it read 81k and change miles as well; 40 miles more than the a30pro. Hmmm… is it a chinese diagnostic tool issue? I then got my Innova 5610 (US Made) and guess what… it read 81K and change miles as well, the same as the Autel MK908P.

soooo….

  • is it that my instrument panel is programmed for 18″ wheels instead of 17″ as it should?
  • is it that Subaru programs the instrument cluster to get out of the warranty liability sooner?

I have the car since it was 30 miles new. The car was only to the dealer once when the left rear trailing arm broke, and to tire places before I got my own tire changer and balancing machines in April 2018

Today I stopped by the local dealer, to see if they wanted to connect the Subaru Select Monitor and see what it read, but they just wanted $149 to do so. With all due respect… scr…. them.

What is going on? Has anyone else found or heard of anything similar?
