Can you elaborate on why you recommend the H9 over the H11 …?
The Gen 5 Outback’s OE low beam halogen bulbs are H11. H9 are optically identical to the H11, except they put out about 65% more light (ie ~2100 vs ~1250 lumens), at the cost of only a 10 watt increase in power consumption (65 vs 55 watts) and a slightly shorter lifespan the service. The H11 bulb also includes a glow cap, which is redundant for our purposes, while the H9 does not.
The only Engineering The difference between the H9 and H11 is that their mounting bases and connectors are keyed slightly differently. You can easily fit the H9 bulb with bits of tin and a flat file. Or you can make or buy an inexpensive adapter harness that makes it a simple plug-and-play project; no lamp base modifications required. (I’ve done it both ways and prefer the adapter harness solution.)
