The clutches never failed gradually, always all at once in one car, and wouldn’t shift or out of gear, leaving me stuck and in need of a tow.
My first clutch failed at 56k miles and Subaru National after asking paid 1/2 of a new replacement clutch. That second clutch went about 85k in heavy LA traffic, but then it also failed unexpectedly and left me stranded a second time. At about 132k miles, I had a third clutch installed. Irvine Subaru made the second and third clutch.
Another day in downtown LA, I couldn’t shift into 1st or any gear, and the new clutch is only 6 months old, and I was stunned. I had to pull over and have it towed to a local, not a dealer repair shop, and the Japanese specialty auto shop told me the clutch fork broke and told me to go back to the dealer who made the third clutch .
Go figure. I am now dealing with Irvine Subaru to have them fix it like they did the 3rd clutch and probably should have replaced the fork then.
I like to drive a manual transmission, and have never owned a car that didn’t have a manual transmission, and I’m 62 years old, and I’ve had Honda, Toyota, and BMW manual cars, but the problems with the Subaru manual have been more noticeable or highlighted. I have never had to replace a clutch in any Honda, Toyota or BMW, but I have replaced the Subaru clutch once in my first Outback and now twice in my second Outback.
Have you heard of a clutch fork failure? Why are there problems with the Subaru manual transmission? Thoughts?
